40 mm Cup Hinges for Thick and Profiled Cabinet Doors

40 mm Cup Hinges for Thick and Profiled Cabinet Doors

Hinges with a 40 mm cup are designed for thicker wooden cabinet doors and doors with profiled edges. The larger cup and the hinge’s special movement geometry provide the clearance required for the door to open without contacting the cabinet or an adjacent door.

The range includes hinges for full-overlay, half-overlay and inset doors. Both Silentia+ soft-close hinges and sprung self-closing hinges are available.

What does 40 mm mean?

The 40 mm measurement refers to the diameter of the hinge cup drilled into the back of the door. It should not be confused with the thickness of the door. Series N hinges are designed for profiled and thicker wooden doors measuring 20–40 mm thick.

Always check the door thickness, profile, drilling dimensions and technical drawing before drilling the hole for the hinge cup.

Silentia+ soft-close hinges for thick doors

Silentia+ Series N has an adjustable integrated soft-close mechanism operated by two silicone-oil dampers housed in the hinge cup. The damping slows the door during the final part of the closing movement and provides controlled closing.

A simple switch is used to adjust when the decelerating effect is activated. This allows the soft-close function to be adapted to the size, weight and construction of the door.

The soft-close version has a 15.5 mm deep cup and a 94-degree opening angle. The possible drilling distance on the door, known as the K dimension, is 3–14 mm.

Sprung self-closing hinges

The self-closing hinge has an integrated spring that pulls the door inward during the final part of the closing movement and holds it closed. It has no integrated damping and therefore does not slow the door in the same way as Silentia+.

The self-closing version has a 12 mm deep cup, a 40 mm cup diameter and a 94-degree opening angle. The possible K dimension is 3–14 mm.

Full overlay, half overlay or inset

Choose the hinge arm according to how the door needs to be positioned in relation to the cabinet:

  • Full-overlay hinges are used when the door covers most of the cabinet side.
  • Half-overlay hinges are normally used when two doors share the same centre panel.
  • Inset hinges are used when the door sits inside the front edge of the cabinet.

Mounting plates and compatibility

Series N can be used with traditional Series 200 mounting plates and Domi snap-on mounting plates. The selected mounting plate affects the position of the door and the available adjustment.

A hinge with a 40 mm cup cannot automatically replace another 40 mm cup hinge. Check the cup depth, drilling pattern, K dimension, hinge arm, opening angle and mounting-plate compatibility.

Please note: A mounting plate is never included when purchasing a hinge. It must be selected and ordered separately.

Frequently asked questions about 40 mm cup hinges

What does 40 mm mean on a cabinet hinge?

It refers to the diameter of the round hinge cup drilled into the back of the door. It does not specify the door thickness, hinge opening angle or cup drilling depth.

Which doors are 40 mm cup hinges suitable for?

They are primarily intended for thicker wooden cabinet doors and doors with profiled edges. Series N is designed for doors measuring 20–40 mm thick.

Why does a thick cabinet door require a special hinge?

A thick or profiled door may contact the cabinet or an adjacent door during opening. A suitable hinge provides the movement and clearance required by the construction.

What is the difference between Silentia+ and self-closing Series N?

Silentia+ has integrated soft-close damping that slows the door. The self-closing hinge has a spring that pulls the door inward and holds it closed, but it has no integrated damping.

Can the soft-close action be adjusted?

Yes. Silentia+ has two silicone-oil dampers housed in the hinge cup. A simple switch is used to adjust when the decelerating effect is activated.

What opening angle does Series N have?

Both the soft-close and self-closing versions have a 94-degree opening angle.

How deep should I drill for the hinge cup?

Silentia+ Series N has a 15.5 mm deep cup, while the self-closing version has a 12 mm deep cup. Always check the technical drawing for the selected model before drilling.

Which K dimension can be used?

For Series N, the distance between the edge of the door and the cup drilling, known as the K dimension, can be 3–14 mm. The correct dimension depends on the door thickness, profile and required position.

Which mounting plate fits Series N?

Series N is compatible with traditional Series 200 mounting plates and Domi snap-on mounting plates. Select the plate height and design according to the cabinet construction.

Is a mounting plate included with the hinge?

No. A mounting plate is never included when purchasing a hinge and must therefore be selected and ordered separately.

Can I replace an old 40 mm cup hinge with any new 40 mm cup hinge?

No. Check the cup depth, drilling pattern, K dimension, hinge arm, door position, opening angle and mounting-plate compatibility before selecting a replacement.
