35 mm Cup Hinges for Kitchen Cabinets

35 mm Cup Hinges for Kitchen Cabinets

Hinges with a 35 mm cup diameter are the most common type of concealed hinge for kitchen cabinets, cupboard doors and other furniture. The hinge cup is fitted into a 35 mm hole on the inside of the door, while the hinge arm connects to a mounting plate fitted to the cabinet.

The 35 mm measurement refers only to the diameter of the hinge cup. It does not specify the opening angle, drilling depth, function or suitable door thickness. Always check the drilling dimensions and technical drawing before installation.

Choose a hinge for the door position

The shape of the hinge arm determines how the door is positioned in relation to the cabinet:

  • Full-overlay hinges are used when the door covers most of the cabinet side.
  • Half-overlay hinges are normally used when two doors share the same centre panel.
  • Inset hinges are used when the door sits inside the front edge of the cabinet.

Soft-close, self-closing or Push-to-open

You should also select the hinge according to how the door needs to open and close:

  • Soft-close hinges slow the door during the final part of the closing movement.
  • Self-closing hinges have a spring that pulls the door in and holds it closed.
  • Push-to-open hinges are used with a push catch on handleless doors. The hinge has a reverse-action spring. When the door is pressed inward, the push catch releases and the hinge pushes the door outward.

Choose the correct opening angle

Hinges with an opening angle of approximately 105–110 degrees are commonly used for standard kitchen and cabinet doors. A smaller opening angle can restrict the door where space is limited. Wide-angle hinges that open to 155 or 165 degrees are available when greater access to the cabinet is required.

Check drilling dimensions and compatibility

Two hinges with a 35 mm cup are not necessarily interchangeable. Check the door position, opening angle, drilling depth, cup position, screw-hole pattern, hinge arm and required mounting plate.

The number of hinges required depends on the height, weight, width and material of the door. A large or heavy door may require more hinges than a smaller standard door.

Please note: A mounting plate is never included when purchasing a hinge. It must be selected and ordered separately.

Frequently asked questions about 35 mm cup hinges

What does 35 mm mean on a cabinet hinge?

It refers to the diameter of the round hinge cup fitted into the inside of the door. It does not specify the hinge’s opening angle, drilling depth or function.

Is a 35 mm cup standard for kitchen cabinet hinges?

Yes. A 35 mm cup diameter is widely used for concealed hinges fitted to kitchen cabinets, cupboards and furniture. However, this does not mean that all 35 mm cup hinges use the same drilling pattern or mounting plate.

How deep should I drill for a 35 mm cup hinge?

The drilling depth varies between hinge models and series. Always follow the dimensions in the product’s technical drawing and check the door thickness before drilling.

Which hinge should I use for a full-overlay door?

Choose a full-overlay hinge when the door needs to cover most of the cabinet side. Also check the required opening angle, closing function and mounting plate.

What is the difference between full-overlay, half-overlay and inset hinges?

A full-overlay hinge is used when the door covers the cabinet side. A half-overlay hinge is normally used when two doors share a centre panel. An inset hinge is used when the door sits inside the front edge of the cabinet.

Should I choose soft-close, self-closing or Push-to-open?

Choose soft-close when the door should be slowed during closing, self-closing when the spring should pull the door inward, or Push-to-open for a handleless door used with a push catch.

Which opening angle should I choose?

An opening angle of approximately 105–110 degrees suits many standard kitchen and cabinet doors. Choose a smaller angle where space is limited or a wide-angle hinge when greater access to the cabinet is required.

Can I reuse my existing mounting plate?

Only if the mounting plate is compatible with the new hinge series, fixing method and required door position. A 35 mm cup does not guarantee that the existing mounting plate will fit.

Is a mounting plate included with the hinge?

No. A mounting plate is never included when purchasing a hinge and must be selected and ordered separately.

How many hinges do I need for a cabinet door?

The number depends on the height, width, weight and material of the door as well as the selected hinge model. Large, wide or heavy doors normally require more hinges.

Can I replace an old 35 mm cup hinge with any new 35 mm cup hinge?

No. Check the cup position, drilling depth, screw-hole pattern, hinge arm, opening angle, door position and mounting-plate compatibility before choosing a replacement.
