Hinges for Aluminium Frames and Metal Profiles
Hinges for Aluminium Frames and Metal Profiles
Hinges for aluminium frames are designed for kitchen, cabinet and furniture doors constructed from a metal frame or profile. The fixing differs from standard hinges for wooden doors and must suit the shape and dimensions of the aluminium profile.
The range includes traditional concealed hinges for aluminium frames, models for Practical aluminium profiles and recessed AIR hinges. Self-closing, Push-to-open, unsprung and soft-close versions are available.
The hinge must match the aluminium profile
It is not enough to select a hinge described as suitable for aluminium frames. The width, shape, material thickness and prepared fixing of the profile must match the hinge dimensions and drilling pattern.
Hinges designed for a specific profile, such as the Practical aluminium profile, must be used with the intended profile type. Always check the technical drawing for the profile and the hinge installation dimensions before ordering.
Full-overlay or inset doors
Choose the hinge arm according to how the aluminium frame needs to be positioned in relation to the cabinet:
- Full-overlay hinges are used when the door covers most of the cabinet side.
- Inset hinges are used when the door sits inside the front edge of the cabinet.
The final position of the door is also affected by the mounting-plate height and hinge adjustment.
Self-closing hinges
Self-closing hinges have an integrated spring that pulls the door inward during the final part of the closing movement and holds it closed. They are used when the hinge’s spring force should close the door.
Push-to-open for handleless aluminium frames
Push-to-open hinges are used with a push catch on handleless doors. The hinge has a reverse-action spring. When the door is pressed inward, the push catch releases and the hinge pushes the door outward.
Check that the push catch, its stroke and any adapters or strike plates suit the construction and weight of the door.
Unsprung hinges
An unsprung hinge neither pulls the door inward nor pushes it outward. It is used when opening and closing are controlled by a separate fitting or another part of the construction.
AIR hinges for aluminium frames
AIR is a compact premium hinge recessed into the top and bottom edges of the door and cabinet. When the door is closed, the hinges are almost completely concealed and occupy very little cabinet space.
A door must always be fitted with one right-hand and one left-hand hinge. Two right-hand or two left-hand AIR hinges cannot be used on the same door.
AIR is available in different versions, including models with integrated soft-close. Select a compatible right-hand and left-hand hinge with the same function and finish, and follow the routing and installation dimensions for the door and cabinet.
Check the installation before ordering
Check the aluminium profile, door position, opening angle, fixing, drilling pattern and required function. Also ensure that the hinge, mounting plate and other components belong to compatible series.
Please note: A mounting plate is never included when purchasing a hinge. If the selected model uses a mounting plate, it must be selected and ordered separately.
Frequently asked questions about hinges for aluminium frames
Can I use a standard wooden-door hinge on an aluminium frame?
Normally not. The fixing must suit the shape, dimensions and material thickness of the aluminium profile. Choose a hinge designed for the relevant frame profile.
Do all aluminium-frame hinges fit every aluminium profile?
No. Aluminium profiles can have different widths, shapes, material thicknesses and fixing arrangements. Check the technical drawings for both the profile and hinge before ordering.
What is a Practical aluminium profile?
It is a specific type of aluminium profile. Hinges described as suitable for Practical aluminium profiles are designed for that profile and do not automatically fit other aluminium frames.
Should I choose a full-overlay or inset hinge?
Choose full overlay when the door should cover most of the cabinet side. Choose inset when the aluminium frame should sit inside the front edge of the cabinet.
What is the difference between self-closing and unsprung hinges?
A self-closing hinge has a spring that pulls the door inward and holds it closed. An unsprung hinge has no closing force and is used when the door is controlled by a separate fitting or another part of the construction.
How does Push-to-open work on an aluminium frame?
The Push-to-open hinge is used with a push catch and has a reverse-action spring. When the door is pressed inward, the push catch releases and the hinge pushes the door outward.
What is an AIR hinge?
AIR is a compact premium hinge recessed into the top and bottom edges of the door and cabinet. It occupies very little space and is almost completely concealed when the door is closed.
Do I need a right-hand and left-hand AIR hinge?
Yes. A door with AIR must always be fitted with one right-hand and one left-hand hinge. Select two compatible versions with the same function and finish. Two right-hand or two left-hand hinges cannot be used on the same door.
Are AIR hinges available with soft-close?
Yes. The range includes AIR hinges with integrated soft-close. Each door requires a compatible right-hand and left-hand hinge with the same function and finish.
Is a mounting plate included with the hinge?
No. A mounting plate is never included when purchasing a hinge. If the hinge model uses a mounting plate, it must be selected and ordered separately.
What should I check before ordering?
Check the profile shape and dimensions, door position, required function, opening angle, fixing, drilling pattern and mounting-plate compatibility. For AIR, you must also select one right-hand and one left-hand hinge.
