Hinges for Thick and Profiled Cabinet Doors

Hinges for Thick and Profiled Cabinet Doors

Hinges for thick doors are designed for wooden doors that are thicker than standard kitchen and cabinet doors. They are also suitable for doors with profiled edges where a standard hinge does not provide sufficient clearance during opening.

The range includes several hinge series with different cup sizes, drilling dimensions and movement geometries. Models are available for full-overlay, half-overlay and inset doors, with both soft-close and self-closing options.

Why is a special hinge required?

When a thick or profiled door opens, its edge moves close to the cabinet. With a standard hinge, the edge may contact the cabinet or an adjacent door before the door has opened correctly.

Hinges for thick doors have an adapted movement geometry that moves the door away from the cabinet during opening. The available clearance depends on the hinge model, door thickness, profile, K dimension and mounting plate.

Series 200 for doors up to 35 mm thick

Series 200 hinges with a 94-degree opening angle are available for thick and profiled wooden doors measuring 19–35 mm thick. These models have a 35 mm cup with an 11 mm drilling depth and can be used with a K dimension of 3–9 mm.

Series 200 is compatible with traditional Series 200 mounting plates and Domi snap-on mounting plates.

Series N for doors up to 40 mm thick

Series N has a larger 40 mm cup and is designed for profiled and thicker wooden doors measuring 20–40 mm thick. The hinges have a 94-degree opening angle and are available as both Silentia+ soft-close and self-closing versions.

Silentia+ has two silicone-oil dampers housed in the hinge cup. A simple switch adjusts when the decelerating effect is activated. The self-closing version instead has a spring that pulls the door inward and holds it closed.

Series F for thick or profiled doors

Series F is intended for thick or profiled doors where the edge requires additional clearance during opening. Always check the permitted door thickness, drilling dimensions and technical drawing for the selected version.

Full overlay, half overlay or inset

Choose the hinge arm according to how the door needs to be positioned in relation to the cabinet:

  • Full-overlay hinges are used when the door covers most of the cabinet side.
  • Half-overlay hinges are normally used when two doors share the same centre panel.
  • Inset hinges are used when the door sits inside the front edge of the cabinet.

Do not select by door thickness alone

Two doors of the same thickness may require different hinges depending on the edge profile and required position. Check the total door thickness, profile shape, cup size, drilling depth, K dimension and required clearance.

Also consider the height, width, weight and material of the door when deciding how many hinges are required. A large or heavy door may require more hinges than a smaller standard door.

Check compatibility before ordering

One hinge for thick doors cannot automatically replace another. Check the hinge series, cup diameter and depth, drilling pattern, K dimension, hinge arm, opening angle and mounting-plate compatibility.

Please note: A mounting plate is never included when purchasing a hinge. It must be selected and ordered separately.

Frequently asked questions about hinges for thick doors

When do I need a hinge for a thick door?

It is required when the thickness or profiled edge of the door means that a standard hinge does not provide sufficient clearance. The door may otherwise contact the cabinet or an adjacent door during opening.

Which door thicknesses are the hinges suitable for?

This varies between series. Series 200 is intended for thick and profiled doors measuring 19–35 mm. Series N is intended for profiled and thicker doors measuring 20–40 mm. Always check the specifications for the selected model.

What is the difference between Series 200 and Series N?

Series 200 for thick doors has a 35 mm cup and is intended for doors up to 35 mm thick. Series N has a 40 mm cup and is intended for doors up to 40 mm thick. The drilling depth and K dimension also differ.

What is Series F used for?

Series F is used for thick or profiled doors that require additional clearance during opening. Always check the permitted door thickness and drilling dimensions for the selected version.

Can I select a hinge based only on the door thickness?

No. You must also consider the door’s edge profile, position, weight and size as well as the hinge cup size, drilling depth, K dimension and opening movement.

What is the K dimension?

The K dimension is the distance from the edge of the door to the edge of the hinge-cup drilling. It affects door movement, overlay and clearance and must be selected according to the technical drawing.

What opening angle do the hinges have?

The models in this category have a 94-degree opening angle. Always check the specifications for the selected product before ordering.

Are soft-close hinges available for thick doors?

Yes. Series N Silentia+ has adjustable integrated soft-close operated by two silicone-oil dampers housed in the hinge cup.

What is the difference between soft-close and self-closing?

A soft-close hinge slows the door during the final part of the closing movement. A self-closing hinge has a spring that pulls the door inward and holds it closed, but has no integrated damping.

Which mounting plate should I choose?

The mounting plate must be compatible with the hinge series and required door position. Also check the plate height and whether the hinge uses traditional or snap-on fixing.

Is a mounting plate included with the hinge?

No. A mounting plate is never included when purchasing a hinge and must therefore be selected and ordered separately.

How many hinges do I need for a thick door?

The number depends on the height, width, weight and material of the door as well as the selected hinge model. Large, wide or heavy doors normally require more hinges.

Can I replace an old hinge with any model intended for thick doors?

No. Check the hinge series, cup diameter and depth, drilling pattern, K dimension, hinge arm, door position, opening angle and mounting-plate compatibility.
